Choosing The Best Card Material

We understand you have researched the event card printer choices but have you weighed the actual cards and the pro's and con's?

HOW LONG IS THE CARD EXPECTED TO LAST?

We use materials based on how the card will be used, stored and life expectancy. It's ideal to match the printer purchased with the card type that will match most all of your events. Event Card durability is worth your time.

IS RFID REQUIRED?

Some printers simply cannot handle various RFID chips while others can. However, there are pro's and con's to chooing one card type vs. the other. Do you research beforehand.

DOES THE PRINTING NEED TO BE WATERPROOF?

Rain or wet surroundings can be unpredictable. We do not want to hide behind the benefits of one card vs the other. It's important you understand what you are buying.

CARD PRODUCTION

Understanding card production will help you make decisions.

We simply state the pro's and con's below or you can decide to dive into production with us..

Most event cards are printed digitally when 5,000 cards or under. This also helps with different versions as we do not have to change printing plates. However, large runs are printed litho using either PMS or CMYK. Do you often have numerous versions/templates? Do you require PMS colors? Security features required? These are a few questions that will need to be answered to guide you.

Card Layering (Collation)

Inkjet cards are built differently than PVC cards. The matrials used can be matte or gloss. The difference in the materials dictate the print quality, water resistence and type of printer you can use. Understanding how long the card will need to last, how it will be stored or used and if preprinting is required will help us determine what materials to use. You have a seat at the manufacturing table, let us know!

Lamination (Protecting the preprinting)

Both inkjet and PVC cards come with lamination options to protect preprinting, holograms or security inks. In addition to protecting these elements, lamination allows you to print over features such as a hologram or invisible ink. Also, the static printing becomes waterproof. The one caveat to this is the matte inkjet card. This particular card contains no laminate on it so stock cannot be preprinted but this stock is much more waterproof than the gloss inkjet material with laminate - just no option to have preprinting done at our facility.

Depending on the card type chosen, we will use one of two different die cutting processes. Match Die's are incredibly expensive whereas PMC is not. Making a custom size is less costly using PMC. With PMC there is often one side sharper than the other. This isn't noticeable when looking at the card and in most cases, will not hurt printing. It is ideal, however, to let us know what side you will be printing large solids, edge-to-edge on. We can package the cards or print faint images on the side that is cut to better accept the edge-to-edge print.

Security Features

Most events require visible features (hologram, OVI, etc.) or invisible features (Invisible ink, AG Mark, etc.). It is often recommended to blend a visible feature with an invisible feature. What a counterfeiter can see will be attacked and replicated first. Balance visible with invisible. We do offer secure design as well if needed and are happy to guide you on best practice for your event needs.

Our production machinery goes fast. The slowest we can run this machine is 12,000 cards per hour depending on size. We often print inventory or sequential numbering on cards. This helps you keep track of issuance and inventory. Additionally, we can print barcodes or RFID data onto the cards. Let us help you with all the data imaging that doesn't need to be done on-site.

Based on card size and data location, we may choose to print the data variably on press or via card printer.

Matte Inkjet cards

SwiftColor printer

The matte stock cannot be preprinted in small volume. The material size simply will not work in our presses. We can special order material for large runs and preprint cards. This matte stock is shown to receive the toner and large solids much better than the glossy stock. It is also water-resistant and more earth-friendly. We can use a compostable core to make this card biodegradable. The one downside is that you must print via the Swiftcolor all graphics on all cards. In most cases, we sell blanks in the size you desire. An issue here is slotting the cards and not printing next to the slot for fear of damaging the printer. We can sell slot hole machines if requested.

Gloss Inkjet cards

Swiftcolor printer

These cards can be preprinted and are layered in a similar fashion as PVC cards with a clear inkjet overlay applied over the printing. This allows you to register the preprinting with the variable data. Also, you can embed a hologram and image over it if you want greater card/event security. Because of the layering, we can pre-slot the cards with preprinting and our presses flood ink much better than any desktop printer. Also, the ability to print litho (PMS) or digital (CMYK with various templates) is available. The top layer is receptive to ink but also water so this card type is not as water-resistant as the matte material.

PVC cards

ZC10L or Matica printers

Looks and feels like a credit card, just bigger in size. This formula allows for all benefits. Preprinting either litho or digital, embedding security features and because it is a ribbon process, significantly more waterproof. The Matica event card printer does not present ribbon issues but does not image to the edge as well as the Zebra printer. There are pro's and con's to both printers please do your research including supply chain. With the ZC10L printer you can order cards from us assuming you have extra ribbon for your event. It's a back and forth adventure with this issue. On the Matica printer, normal distribution channels and supplies are available. You are not locked into one supplier and their oversea production facility. Buy domestically for less problems. Production is almost never done months in advance. With timing and quality critical, buy from someone you trust.

2023 INDUSTRY CHOICE

Swiftcolor SCC-4000D

Since 2015 when the SwiftColor printer launched, the event card market has responded with overall excitement. MLB, NFL and other major sports entities have purchased 100's of printers. Most all MLB and NFL teams badge their events with SwiftColor cards. In 2019, Silicon Valley followed suite. The cards are often preprinted with security features, PMS logos and static imagery. The ability to manage issuance on site helps these large sport organizations control or deny access promply.

According to Matt Kronholm of Easy Badges, "By far it is the most flexible large format card printer and can print anywhere from a standard CR80 card to an enveloped sized card. Other solutions only offer customization with the credit card sized area or just a little extra length, but not width. Many major sport organizations have switched to the SwiftColor including professional and collegiate sporting teams and championship series. I will not list them here to avoid a lawsuit since I can not remember the confidentiality agreements for those. The SwiftColor SCC-4000D can handle any ID that needs to be scene from afar for event credentials, law enforcement IDs, and many other applications.".
